HISTORY OF THE DEPARTMENT

Brief history of the Department for History of Architecture and of Monuments

Architecture history was first taught in Hungary at the Jozsef Technical College in the academic year 1869/1870, included in the art history lectures of the young architect professor Antal Skalnitzky (1836-1878).

In 1870 professor Imre Steindl (1839-1902) and in 1872 professor Alajos Hauszmann (1847-1906) also joined the teaching of the subject. In 1887 with the establishment of a new department under the professorship of Gyozo Czigler (1850-1905) evolved the organization based on teaching the different periods of architectural history on different departments.

Head of Department for Ancient Architecture was Gyozo Czigler, followed by Virgil Nagy (1859-1921) and Gyula Walder (1884-1944). The first head of the Department for Architecture of the Middle Ages was Imre Steindl, later Frigyes Schulek (1841-1919), Istvan Moller (1860-1934), Karoly Csanyi (1873-1955), and Jeno Rados (1895-1995). The chair of the Department for New Age Architecture was taken over from Alajos Hauszmann by Dezso Hultl (1870-1941) and Lorand Friedrich (1891-1947).

After the World War II. – from 1950 on – head of the Department for Ancient Architecture became Mate Major (1904-1986), that of the Department for New Age Architecture became Gyorgy Kardos (1902-1953) while Jeno Rados continued on directing the Department for Architecture of the Middle Ages.

The three departments merged in 1957 under the direction of Mate Major. From this department he founded the Institute of History and Theory of Architecture in 1971, the name of which was changed to Department for History of Architecture and of Monuments in 1997.

In the chair of the institute Mate Major was followed by Janos Bonta and Mihaly Zador. The last director of the institute was Gyula Istvanfi. The present head of the department is Janos Krähling.
